White Cane Week 2018, February 5 to 9

Since 1946, the first week of February has been designated as White Cane Week in Canada. This important week raises public awareness of the challenges facing Canadians living with vision loss. From February 5 to 9, 2018, CIUSSS West-Central Montreal is holding events to highlight White Cane Week, the services offered within West-Central Montreal for children and adults with a visual impairment, and to showcase the talents and contributions of our users.

Monday February 5
White Cane week “Kick-Off”, 11:15 am to 1:00 pm, Philip E. Layton Hall, MAB-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre, MAB site. A panel discussion from 12:00 to 1:00 pm will feature several visually impaired clients of the MAB-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre who will share their rehabilitation journey and respond to questions. Refreshments will be served. A display of clients’ artwork and sale of weaving products made by clients will also take place.

Tuesday February 6
Event at the Jewish General Hospital, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Cote-St-Catherine Road main entrance. Experience firsthand how a person with a visual impairment navigates the hospital. Participants will have the opportunity to go to their destination within the JGH blindfolded or with a vision loss simulator with either the guide dog or a detection cane. An orientation and mobility specialist will accompany the participants. A demonstration of reading and "writing" braille will also be given. Learn how to braille your name and join us for a game of braille Scrabble.
